Our Story
About Coach Jeff
Hey, I’m Coach Jeff—a Black Belt in Jiujitsu, Brown Belt in Aikido, Co-Owner of Kindred Jiujitsu. I found my calling on the mat in 2009, the same year I became a father. That life-changing moment made one thing crystal clear: my family would need the confidence and self-defense skills to navigate a tough world. That moment lit a fire in me—and I’ve been on the mats, day in and day out, ever since—refining my technique, deepening my mindset, and living what I teach.
My Jiujitsu is focused and methodical; my Aikido taught me to move with balance and to never meet force with force. Together, they’ve shaped my mindset and taught me the value of showing up with discipline, humility, and strength—in training, in parenting, and in life.
The greatest gift martial arts have given to my family is true self-confidence—earned through competence, built by failing forward, showing up consistently, and growing through the grind. Just as important, it’s connected us to a greater community—one rooted in trust, support, and shared growth. Community is one of our family’s core values, and through martial arts, we’ve built meaningful relationships that extend far beyond the mat.
At Shielded Roots, we’re not just building better martial artists—we’re raising up strong individuals. I teach classes for students of all ages—from energetic 4-year-olds just starting their journey to adults well into their 60s looking to challenge themselves and grow. Whether you're here to protect yourself, compete, or discover something new within, you’ll find a place on these mats. Come roll with us, and discover how martial arts can empower every part of your life.
About Coach Jenny
Hi, I’m Coach Jenny—a Brown Belt in Jiujitsu, a passionate coach at Shielded Roots, and a proud daughter of the beautiful island of Guam. I’m also the wife of Coach Jeff and the mother of our two amazing sons, who continue to inspire my journey on and off the mat.
My path in martial arts has been one of perseverance, growth, and deep connection—not just to the practice, but to my heritage and to our family’s shared mission. Martial arts has taught me to lead with grace, strength, and intention. Every roll is a lesson in humility, and every class is a chance to uplift others.
As an Island woman, I carry my culture with pride and weave it into everything I do—from teaching technique to building community. I’m especially proud to be part of a growing community of Island women in martial arts, creating a space that’s welcoming, empowering, and inclusive.
